This work is funded by the public via direct donations. There are now four usual methods of donation depending on the needs of the donor: Patreon, Bank Transfer, Stripe & PayPal. The email to use for PayPal is rosie@ausgov.info

Bank: St George
Account Name:'Rose Williams'
Branch Number:112-908
Account Number: 485 746 256

Some people prefer to donate via Bank Transfer: bank transfer either as a one off payment or at regular intervals as then this avoids the fee to me that is charged by Patreon or for other personal reasons. It has the benefit of not having to sign up to a new platform. It can be a good idea to contact me and let me know if you are concerned the details you entered aren't correct - to ensure your money reaches me as intended.

$20
$50

For people who just want a quick way to send money without signing up for anything or visiting a banking site, Stripe allows this via these buttons. The amount is set and is a one-off payment using credit card details. If you put in a valid email address then you should get a receipt. You should see AusGov.info on your bank statement details. The Stripe platform processes all financial information for a secure transation.

Privacy and your donation

Whether a donor is an individual or an organisation, I take privacy issues seriously. In order to avoid breaching people's sense of privacy, unless I am directly contacted about a donation by the donor, I do not thank them unless having a direct conversation about a donation.

Having said this, most people become donors when they read that someone they respect suggests they do. Please take a moment every now and then and, if you are happy to be seen publicly supporting my work, share my work with your networks. While I am yet to receive a minimum wage for what I do I want people to know that I am grateful for both the financial and moral support I receive.

Grants, Ministers and Portfolios in this data relate to the period prior to the 30 March resuffle. If my work receives adequate funding, grants awarded after that period will be added after those decisions are made & as time permits. Ministry & Portfolio names will be updated at that time.

Known as Murujuga to its traditional custodians, this land- and seascape has over 1 million art works. While the scientific and cultural significance of this area is acknowledged, we still know little about the age of this landscape, the regional palaeoclimatology, and the timing and intensity of rock art production since Aboriginal people moved into this region 50,000 years ago. This project will develop new scientific approaches to direct-dating engravings and stone features, reconstruct climate from geological proxies, and model voyaging opportunities as this unique cultural estate transformed to an archipelago.

They work, because they contain small holes where these gases can be trapped. Unfortunately, finding gas inside these holes experimentally is incredibly difficult, making it challenging to make better porous materials. In this project, I will use extreme pressures to saturate these holes with gas molecules, allowing us to see them. Not only will this mean that better porous materials can be designed and made, but will provide a unique approach to storing and trapping gases to be used in a variety of applications, from the energy to medical sectors.

Meristems are the growing tips of plants, and thus the fundamental unit of plant growth and productivity. This project will develop new knowledge of how plants integrate changes in the environment to regulate meristem activity. This project will define new paradigms of how oxygen and redox status interact with energy and other cues to regulate decisions to grow or quiesce. This will underpin the development of new strategies to optimise crop management and productivity, improve the efficiency of inputs, and reduce the risk of decision making in crop production.

Manipulating population sex ratio is a powerful tool for either enhancing the viability of threatened species or decimating pests. However, despite much scientific effort testing sex ratio theory, the cryptic mechanisms driving sex allocation remain unidentified, hindering progress in these fields. The project will identify the mechanisms by which sex ratio adjustments are made and establish how individual-level responses influence insular population structure and growth. It will provide benefits by assisting Australia's efforts in eradicating invasive mouse populations.

Today the Universe is littered with dead galaxies, and their distribution is correlated with location (environment). This suggests that location is one of the prime suspects in this galactic whodunit. However, previous observations and techniques have restricted us to only measuring galaxy environments in the nearby Universe, inhibiting our ability to identify when, where and why they are killed. Purpose Benefits from environmental policies are often unpriced “non-market values” (NMVs). Environmental agencies struggle to know how best to measure these relatively intangible benefits, but doing so is important to ensure value for money from public investments. Environmental economists have developed and applied a wide range of methods for estimating NMVs. The methods vary in their comprehensiveness, accuracy and cost. Yet no rigorous tool is available to assess (a) which NMV method is best to implement, accounting for its cost and its potential to improve decisions, or (b) whether any NMV method improves decisions enough to warrant its cost. In creating such a tool, this project will deliver a key breakthrough in environmental economics.

In this project, I will explore models of gene birth and death by comparing genomes of Brassicaceae, including the model Arabidopsis and Brassica crop species. By comparing many genomes I will learn how new genes were born. I will build models that predict the likelihood of gene loss based on a gene’s physical environment, function, and expression. The project will build on our understanding of plant genetic diversity. Expected outcomes of this research include the identification of key genomic elements in gene birth and loss and support strategies to improve plant cultivars.

Purpose This project aims to use the most powerful radio and optical telescopes in the world to identify the mechanisms driving the quenching of star formation in the most massive structures in the Universe. This research expects to answer some of the fundamental questions identified by the international astronomy community regarding how galaxies form and evolve, how star formation proceeds and why nearly half of the galaxies in the local Universe have stopped forming stars. It will forge strong links with international partners, strengthen Australian expertise in a critical area of astronomical research, offer an ideal platform for accelerating the training of students in STEM and contribute to public outreach work.

Purpose This project aims to discover how invertebrate and vertebrate model species see linearly polarised light by constructing a novel instrument to determine limits to sensitivities, as well as animals' ability to distinguish small differences in degree and angle of linear polarisation. The project aims to predict how this might be affected as environments change. A clear understanding of biological solutions to polarisation perception can inform the design and development of novel bio-inspired imaging sensors that will be particularly suited to small, autonomous robots.

Purpose Most of the known molecular compounds exist in crystalline form, and their stability and properties depend upon the structure and interactions in crystals. This project aims to develop methods in the field of quantum crystallography to accurately estimate the electronic properties of molecular crystals, their stability, and associated energetics. The outcomes will be directly applicable in the design of new solid-state forms of pharmaceutical drugs with enhanced solubility and efficacy and hence reduced drug dosage. Understanding the electronic properties in molecular semiconductor crystals, and the strategies to tune and control these properties will contribute to future generation electronic device material manufacturing.

Purpose This project aims to evaluate links between of aid programs and women’s empowerment in Southeast Asia. Women’s empowerment has gained substantial visibility as a global development objective, however progress has been slow. This project offers the first study of the political economy of the design, implementation and evaluation of aid programs for women's empowerment across development institutions, companies and NGOs. Exploring these dynamics is a key to understanding how aid initiatives can generate successful approaches to empowering women. The project will build on current practices to improve aid programming and place Australia at the forefront of donors’ efforts to advance gender equality.

Purpose This project aims to apply a comparative experimental and analytical approach to quantify linkages among multiple stressors driving kelp forest loss and expansion of turfs across three continents. Transformations of kelp forests to turf reefs are associated with a profound loss of ecological productivity and function, with significant impacts for societies reliant on the biodiversity and functioning of kelp ecosystems. Field and laboratory experiments will be used to develop and test green gravel, a novel restoration tool that aims to overcome reinforcing feedbacks (lack spores and hard substrate) preventing recovery of kelp forests. This will provide significant benefits by identifying solutions to address loss of kelp forests in Australia and globally.

Purpose This project aims to enhance understanding of how people process visual scenes containing multiple moving objects of interest. The project intends to measure human visual performance to determine how the brain processes multiple motion signals simultaneously. Expected outcomes include an increased understanding of how we are able to use an evolving visual scene to distinguish between changes due to self-motion and those due to the motion of multiple moving objects such as crowded city footpaths and busy roads. The results will improve our understanding of failures to see moving objects in challenging viewing conditions (for example, high density traffic), and inform work in the design of autonomous driving and augmented reality display systems.
