PurposeThis challenge, open to all Australians, draws attention to an urgent aspect of managing our climate change-induced biome - lack of comprehensive data on biodiversity - and aims to address it by engaging people from all walks of life to participate in a competition that's fun, locally relevant and inspirational, while gathering relevant and verified biodiversity data. Australians will join regional science hub 'teams' in the digital world, and submit sightings of wildlife - both plants and animals. Submissions are verified by experts, feedback is sent to the submitter, and data is shared with the Atlas of Living Australia. The ' team' with the highest eventual score wins the challenge.

PurposeThis project aims to dissect the ecological and evolutionary processes causing a decline in an iconic Australian bird species. Studies that can properly test explanations for declines in wild populations are rare. This project aims to test how environmental and genetic processes shape individual traits, how these traits determine fitness and how changes in individual fitness affect population dynamics. The project expects to provide essential information for the improved management of Australian bird populations, and for understanding the effects of environmental change on natural systems globally.

PurposeThis project aims to study the fundamental processes governing interaction of ultrafast light pulses with an important class of ferroelectric materials. In particular, it will investigate the physics of light-induced ferroelectric domain reversal in various types of ferroelectrics. Project outcomes will lead to the development of a novel, ultrafast laser domain patterning technique for application in nonlinear photonics, optical memories, and photovoltaics. This technique will be employed to create the first example of three-dimensional domain patterns for versatile wave interactions. This project expects to expand Australia's knowledge in ultrafast laser engineering of materials and contribute towards its rapid uptake by industries, with great potential for commercialisation.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate whether ocean surface temperatures can increase beyond the 35 degree centigrade threshold for the survival of humans and many other mammal species. Climate models predict that ocean surface temperatures will exceed 35 degree centigrade in parts of the middle east and throughout much of South East Asia in as little as 50 years. This project will use a series of laboratory experiments to test whether parts of the ocean surface can be warmed beyond this limit under natural conditions. Expected outcomes of this project are a new understanding of what sets the maximum surface temperature of the ocean, thereby allowing us to determine whether coastal regions of the humid tropics and sub-tropics will remain habitable for humans and other mammal species in the near future.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate the causes and consequences of variation in rate of DNA sequence evolution across three kingdoms of life. Dates estimated from DNA sequences have a wide range of applications, including evolutionary biology, conservation prioritisation and epidemiology. These methods rely on accurate rate estimates, but current models lack information about the biological drivers of rates of genomic change. This project will test reliability of current methods, identify potentially misleading estimates of disease origin or conservation priorities, and develop new approaches with empirically-informed models of rate change.

PurposeThis project aims to develop highly porous, transparent and electrically conducting networks of oxide nanoparticles for artificial photosynthesis applications. The majority of hydrogen is currently produced via natural gas reforming, a process that generates a significant carbon footprint due to the use of fossil fuels. This project will develop novel materials and fabrication methods to improve the efficiency of hydrogen production using clean and renewable solar energy. This project will contribute to development of technologies for the chemical storage of renewable energy, and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. This will have applications in the areas of optoelectronic devices, medical biosensors, and photocatalysis, offering downstream benefits for the society, the economy and the environment.

PurposeThis project aims to develop a holistic framework for prioritisation of uncertainties in Integrated Water Resource Assessment and Management to assist water resource analysts and planners to improve sustainability of water resource management outcomes. The framework will help scientists, consultants, policy makers and water users better select which sources of uncertainty to address in their work, with what resources, and what methods. Expected outcomes are novel analytical methods to evaluate current practice in uncertainty prioritisation, communicate when and how to use established and novel uncertainty management techniques, and improve prioritisation of uncertainty using proof-of-concept model-based analyses. The project should improve decision making in policy and industry, and societal and environmental outcomes of water management.

PurposeThis project aims to determine the electrical properties of dendrites in human neurons. Dendrites are the primary site of synaptic input to neurons and their electrical properties play a key role in information processing in the brain. While we know much about the electrical properties of dendrites in other species, primarily rodents, little is known about the electrical properties of human dendrites. This project aims to address this gap in knowledge for the first time. The results obtained will shed light on the mechanisms the brain uses to process information, and therefore will bring us a step closer to truly understanding ourselves.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate the impact of the four basic forces of evolution, mutation, selection, neutral drift, and gene flow, on the genome. Genome'scale data have a signature of these forces and extracting it would greatly improve the quality of evolutionary models fit to the data, but the framework to identify the evolutionary forces has not been developed. This project will develop tests for assessing the impact of the primary evolutionary forces on the genome, and test these methods using simulations. The new framework of genomic analysis will be disseminated through an intuitive software package, and will be used to estimate with unprecedented confidence the history of diversification and genome evolution of marsupials.

PurposeThis project aims to explore the design, synthesis, characterisation and applications of novel materials in which metals are bridged by a single carbon atom. Materials based on metals (M) separated by a single oxygen atom (O) underpin all manner of technologies from the pigments of antiquity to modern electronics. Electronic/magnetic communication across MOM bridges is thus extremely well understood. Materials with two metals bridged by one carbon atom (MCM) are in contrast, rare and poorly understood. Developing synthetic routes to such materials will make it possible to map the diversity of chemical and electronic features against theoretical models in search of new materials with unique reactivities and properties for commercial exploitation.

PurposeThis project aims to address how complex hunter-gatherers sustained large villages along the South China Coast for 2 millennia. About 7000 years ago, the people and landscape of this region began a long journey of transformation when affluent village systems appeared. Combining archaeology with archaeo-botany, palaeo-landscape reconstruction, and bio-archaeology, this project seeks to learn how these early coastal societies contributed to regional social-economic developments, in a time long prior to written chronicles. The project expects to support new comprehension of these unique coastal communities and their relationship with others in the broader Asia-Pacific region.

PurposeThis project aims to reveal the process of gaseous accretion in interacting galaxies by elucidating the origin and evolution of the Magellanic Stream. The Magellanic Stream is an enormous tail of hydrogen gas extending from the Magellanic Clouds almost fully around the Milky Way. Through unravelling the Magellanic Stream and revealing how it will impact the Milky Way, this project will help understand how galaxies receive new gas to continue their star formation and very existence. The project will use the newly constructed Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder to shed light on the question of how galaxies evolve, one of the highest priority questions in Australian Astrophysics as defined by the Australian Astronomy Decadal Plan.

PurposeThis project aims to understand how the elements forged in stars flow through space and find their way into new stars and planets. The history of these elements, and how they came to be in planets like ours, is one of the most basic questions remaining in astrophysics. The expected outcome is to provide a model for the history of the elements that can provide a theoretical basis and a vital set of statistical tools to interpret the flood of data that will arrive from Australian and international telescopes over the next five years. The results will significantly benefit astronomical fields from cosmology to chemical evolution, and the machine learning methods developed will have applications well beyond astronomy. The end result will be a new and deeper insight into our cosmic origins.

PurposeThis project aims to resolve simultaneously the timing and space localisation of photoelectron emission from atoms and molecules as a means for targeted breaking of molecular bonds. Existing techniques determine the timing and spatial characteristics of photoemission independently. The simultaneous time'space resolution will allow for the precise manipulation of photoelectrons by a sequence of phase'stabilised laser pulses, a technique known as coherent control. The benefit of this project will be the coherently controlled breaking of molecular bonds in oxide, carbonyl and hydrocarbon molecules. The outcome will be a significant step forward in driving complex photochemical reactions in industry.

PurposeThis project aims to determine the underlying cause of recent earthquake activity in central Australia. Of all the stable continents, Australia is surprisingly seismically active, with intra-plate earthquakes occurring relatively frequently. However, these are unpredictable, placing lives and infrastructure at risk. This project offers the opportunity to use a new seismic experiment to improve detection of small events that may warn of a more dangerous earthquake to come, and provide sub'surface imaging of the hidden crustal boundaries and faults that are ultimately responsible. Benefits will include improved hazard assessment, and a new predictive model for exploration that relates regional seismicity, crustal faults, and mineral systems.

PurposeThis project aims to provide a systematic and empirically-informed account of the way networks facilitate or hinder knowledge. Distinguishing on-line information from disinformation can be difficult. This task can be greatly assisted by networks of trusted peers, but figuring out who to trust is itself a challenge. Identifying, designing, and facilitating networks of trust is therefore an urgent task. PurposeThis project aims to complete the SABRE South dark matter detector with the most radio-pure sodium-iodide crystals installed in the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory. Existing evidence for dark matter is indirect, but the southern hemisphere location and operation, in conjunction with a similar detector in Italy, provides crucial advantages for resolving a dark matter signal from seasonal backgrounds. The expected outcome is to search for dark matter from 2019-2022 and, in doing so, resolve whether one of the most persistent and enigmatic signals for dark matter is real. The benefits will include scientific understanding of the universe, Australian leadership in big science, and significant technological advances. PurposeThis project aims to discover the largest black holes in the early universe and their origin, and weigh them using infrared spectroscopy. Giant black holes at the centres of galaxies reach masses over ten billion times that of our Sun. Astronomy has revealed the origin of black holes with masses similar to that of the Sun, but remains puzzled by the existence of those with masses many million times larger. This project will reveal pathways of black-hole growth early after the Big Bang. The project will shed light on the evolution of galaxies in the early universe and prepare the ground for new work by other scientists, for example on the origin of the elements.

PurposeThis project aims to deliver a new technique for cooling dilute ultracold gases, which are rapidly transitioning from a fundamental physics platform to a building block for quantum technology. This technique is measurement-based feedback cooling. Unlike the current evaporative methods, feedback cooling neither loses atoms, nor relies on elastic collisions or internal atomic structure. This opens up the possibility of directly cooling traditionally un-coolable systems. This project will expand the quality and range of available atomic sources, benefitting research into exotic materials, and improving precision sensor applications. Quantum sensors are rapidly reforming our image of what a sensor is and what it can do, offering unprecedented opportunities in sensor fusion, and directly impacting business opportunities in mineral exploration, mapping and navigation.

PurposeThis project aims to understand the initial steps of RNA biogenesis and how this process is linked to the chromatin environment. Although less than five per cent of our genome encodes proteins, almost the entire genome is transcribed to RNA. A large portion of these transcripts are degraded during the early steps of RNA biogenesis by the RNA surveillance machinery, but the mechanism for the recognition and degradation of these transcripts is not understood. New evidence suggests that the chromatin environment of the transcribed locus plays an important role in this process. This project will lead to significant benefits in the implementation of emerging RNA-based technologies and in understanding how genome stability is maintained.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate health-related topics in invasive fish. The evolution of large brains suggests that smarter individuals have more offspring due to natural and sexual selection. This project aims to test if the ability to perform cognitively challenging tasks predicts reproductive success. In addition, many life history traits show a trade-off between early and late life performance. This project will test this prediction to see if individuals with above average cognitive performance when young are below average when old, that is faster 'cognitive senescence', or whether some individuals stay relatively smarter than others throughout their lives.

PurposeThis project aims to determine whether species that have small geographic ranges and which live in historically stable refugia have evolved narrow climatic tolerances. The project will compare such species with more widespread, related species living in the same areas and combine field- and lab-based estimates of physiological tolerances with genomic estimates of population history and diversity. The expected outcome is to test the prediction from evolutionary theory that small-range, refugial species are intrinsically more sensitive to climatic change. The project expects to provide improved guidance for ecological management of biodiversity hotspots.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate the growth and demonstration of compound semiconductor microring lasers on silicon substrates, using selective area growth to engineer the shape of the lasing cavity at the nano/micro'scale. Silicon photonics is currently a dominant technology in optical and data communication systems, and the continued development demands higher speeds, lower power consumption and lower costs. However, on-chip integrated, high efficiency lasers are still elusive due to mismatch in material platforms between the lasers and silicon substrates. This project will produce reliable, efficient and easily manufacturable laser sources integrated on silicon photonic chips. It is also expected to pave the way for more development of this technology by the industry to further drive the cost of silicon photonics technology down whilst increasing data transmission speed.
