PurposeLiftango has developed a transport solution for both people and goods where multiple pickup and deliveries can be made which minimises the transport distances and time and so reduces costs. The system provides total flexibility and can also still optimise when changes are made to the pick-ups and deliveries. The Accelerating Commercialisation grant will enable the system to be fully tested in the Community Transport sector for busses carrying around 18-20 people. Later it will be used for major route on-demand buses and high volume courier traffic

PurposeThis project will develop advanced digital control techniques to address security, resilience and robustness in complex networks and deliver fundamental advances in the technology for secure and reliable networks. The project will advance the theory on consensus of networked multi-agent systems to facilitate the fast adoption of the internet of things and the continuous growth of cyber-physical systems These systems in many cases work with high efficiency, stability, and low communication overheads. However, there are cases where disturbance amplification and cascading failures can arise from relatively small unforeseen events. The theoretical work will be complemented by detailed nonlinear networked simulations, using intelligent vehicle systems as a case study.

PurposeThis project aims to develop an accurate and efficient simulation framework that allows the consideration of realistic discrete behaviour in geomechanical models without the computational overheads of current models. New computational methods and open'source simulation tools will be developed which will enable the efficient and accurate dynamic simulation of large'scale problems in geomechanics, problems that had formerly been intractable because of their computational size. The unique combination of discrete and continuum methods will allow the economical solution of a range of important geotechnical problems such as the accurate prediction of dynamic effects due to tunnelling, underground workings and mining activities. The outcomes will lead to safer and more economic construction methods and a more accurate assessment of the environmental effects.

PurposeThe Time-layered cultural map (TLCMap) of Australia is an online research platform that will deliver researcher driven national'scale infrastructure for the humanities, focused on mapping, time series, and data integration. The TLCMap will expand the use of Australian cultural and historical data for research through sharply defined and powerful discovery mechanisms, enabling researchers to visualise hidden geographic and historical patterns and trends, and to build online resources which present to a wider public the rich layers of cultural data in Australian locations. TLCMap is not a singular project or software application with a defined research outcome, but infrastructure linking geo'spatial maps of Australian cultural and historical information, adapted to time series and will be a significant contribution to humanities research in Australia. For researchers, it will transform access to data and to visualisation tools and open new perspectives on Australian culture and history. For the public, it will enable increased accessibility to historical and cultural data through visualisations made available online and in print.

PurposeThis project aims to create a ground breaking approach for the scale-free prediction of shear strength of large in'situ rock discontinuities. Failure of rock slopes or rock cliffs can have disastrous consequences for human life, infrastructure and the economy. The stability of a fractured rock mass is controlled by the presence and characteristics of discontinuities, and any rigorous stability assessment requires quantification of discontinuity shear strength. The issue of rock instability affects both the civil and mining sectors. Developing a design methodology that addresses the scale effect for rock slope stability will provide safer civil environments and will allow the optimisation of resource extraction. This project will have significant economical and societal benefits which will apply not only to Australia but also internationally.

PurposeThis project aims to develop competitive anionic toxicity models for antimony, arsenic, molybdenum and selenium supported by detailed speciation information. Available ecotoxicological models for inorganic toxicants have exclusively focused on cations such as zinc, and ignored anionic toxicants such as arsenic and antimony. For available models on cations to be applicable to contaminated environments, it is essential for equivalent anionic toxicity models be developed. This project will develop the first such model, which will provide new insights on ecotoxicological modelling for inorganic anionic toxicants. The project will transform ecotoxicological modelling approaches for metals and metalloids in terrestrial systems and directly improve our ability to assess risks associated with environmental contamination.

PurposeThis project aims to develop advanced Janus nanosheets with organic carbon nitrides and inorganic metal phosphide semiconductors. These nanostructures offer both basic and tunable semiconducting properties that will be used for developing highly efficient devices for the conversion of carbon dioxide to clean fuels through a photoelectrochemical reduction pathway using water and sunlight. Density functional theory calculation coupled with synchrotron studies will be used to investigate theoretical understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of capture and conversion of carbon dioxide over these nanosheets. These low-cost nanostructures will help address clean energy generation and benefit manufacturing industries in reducing the emission of carbon dioxide to the environment.

PurposeThis project aims to fill a critical knowledge gap in the area of wall turbulence by investigating how a rough wall turbulent boundary layer responds to changes, such as wall suction and blowing. The economic and environmental costs caused by the roughening of surfaces on moving vehicles is staggering in the transport industry (roads, rails, air and sea) and ultimately for Australia. This project will generate new knowledge to ascertain whether or not turbulent flows over rough surfaces can be controlled or managed to achieve outcomes such as reducing the drag of a roughened bluff body, for example a ship whose hull is roughened by fouling. The project expects to improve understanding of wall turbulence control, and will lead to significant benefits such as improved control technologies and better prediction and description of wall turbulence.

PurposeThis project aims to identify protein changes on spermatozoa that are highly correlated with the fertility status of bulls. Bull fertility has approached an all-time low as breeding practice has focused predominately on milk production and beef tenderness. This project aims to understand the genetic causes that underpin bull and cattle infertility, and investigate better methods to predict the fertility status of bulls. This project expects to contribute to better clinical management of cattle. This information can then be used for the development of a better diagnostic assay for both the dairy and beef industry.

PurposeThis project aims to optimise long-term water trade-offs in inland wetlands on managed catchments, without compromising their environmental value. These managed wetlands compete for water allocations with irrigation and other uses. Realistic predictions of wetland status will be achieved through the development and integration of an ecohydrological model and a water management decisions model. Application of the tools will improve existing decision support models to help analyse the effects of individual local management decisions on the long-term evolution of the system and the effects of changes in operation policies and climate over the long term. The project will provide critical new information for the improved prediction of wetlands evolution and as a consequence better management.

PurposeThis project aims to increase the uptake of advance personal planning among people aged 65 years or over in the community by developing, implementing and evaluating a community action model. People have a legal right to engage in advance personal planning, a process that helps them discuss and document their financial, personal and health preferences, in case they later lose the ability to make or communicate decisions. Few people plan ahead, even though it can reduce the likelihood of financial exploitation, family conflict and unwanted medical care. This project aims to provide a model of community action to build capacity and collaboration across social services and improve the wellbeing of older people.

PurposeThis project aims to address the cybersecurity problem of securing telecommunication networks to prevent data leakage. Current widely-adopted data-encryption approaches to secure communications will be broken with large'scale quantum computers, and existing information-theoretic approaches rely on the channel quality of the network. To circumvent these risks, this project proposes a new information security approach using information cached at devices to camouflage data. The project will future-proof secure communication systems against large'scale quantum computers, which threaten current encryption approaches. This should ensure that data transmitted over communication networks can never be revealed to interceptors or hackers, even in public WiFi.

PurposeThis project aims to exploit uncultured microorganisms to produce and characterise novel ultraviolet radiation-filter biosynthesis pathways. Current ultraviolet radiation-filtering compounds are toxic and persistent. There is a need for biodegradable, ultraviolet radiation filters that are safe for use across a variety of health and industrial applications. Over millions of years, the damaging effect of ultraviolet radiation has exerted selective pressure on organisms that has driven the evolutionary diversity of natural radiation-filtering compounds. This project expects to characterise and harness the microbial diversity of unique high ultraviolet radiation ecosystems via synthetic biology to produce industrially and pharmacologically useful ultraviolet radiation filters.

PurposeThis project aims to develop a particle scale microprobe to capture the transient dynamics of biomass compaction, dilation and associated airflow for pneumatic conveying and potentially beyond. Low velocity, dense phase pneumatic transport presents the ideal method for transporting delicate biomass feedstocks. However, without the fundamental understanding of the compactive and dilative response of biomass ensembles, pneumatic conveyors will be over-designed and energy intensive. This project will enable accurate measurement of the motion, inertia and force information at the particle scale, to produce more accurate design protocols for dense phase biomass pneumatic transport.

PurposeThis project aims to understand what governs the sensitivity of many technological and biological processes to the precise nature of the salt present in solution. The term -ion'specific- encompasses all the circumstances in which the influence of a salt in solution depends on the precise chemical nature of the salt, not just the electrical charge on the ions that form the salt. As such, ion'specific effects abound and have important consequences in most situations involving solutions, including cellular functions and battery technology. This project will enable us to understand and control the influence of specific ions, building on our recently described fundamental ion'specific series with colloid science experiments and quantum simulations. This project should overcome current challenges in predicting ion'specific effects leading to progress in a wide variety of applications of colloid and interface science, from sensor interfaces to self-assembly.

PurposeCompared to normal cells, cancer cells utilise a different mixture of fuels to sustain high rates of growth. Thus a better understanding of cancer metabolism will uncover vulnerabilities that can be exploited in the clinic. We have discovered a molecular mechanism that coordinates two key metabolic processes essential for cancer cell survival. Our project involves colon cancer but because this mechanism is present in many other cancer types we anticipate broad significance of our work.

PurposePremature birth is a major and growing health problem and can lead to serious behavioural and cognitive disorders in later life. Even moderately prematurely born children are at increased risk of developing these disorders. We propose that premature loss of support from growth promoting steroid hormones from the placenta lead to suboptimal development. This project will examine the effectiveness of replacing these hormones in prematurely born neonates for improving outcomes in childhood.

PurposeMale development, fertility, and lifelong health are fundamentally supported by testicular androgens. For decades we believed we fully understood how androgens are produced, however recent research has identified a second 'backdoor' pathway playing a key role in male development. We will selectively block either (or both) pathways in mice to determine how each promotes correct male development and function. The unique knowledge gained will underpin efforts to support lifelong male health.

PurposeAsthma exacerbations are triggered by infections or allergens and are often poorly responsive to therapy. The specific factors inducing episodes remain largely unknown but are linked to activation of innate immunity. We found that the cytokine IL-36 is linked to activation and expansion of innate lymphoid cells, which may regulate exacerbations. Our studies will further define involvement of these cells in the mechanism underlying exacerbation providing novel insights into new treatments.

PurposeEmphysema is a major cause of illness and death and there are no good treatments. It is caused by smoking that induces lung inflammation and disease. Cellular respiration can become defective causing oxidative stress and inflammation and we think that these may drive emphysema. We have developed new treatments that restore cell respiration and stop oxidative stress. We will assess altered respiration and oxidative stress in emphysema and stop and/or reverse these changes with our new therapies.

PurposeProgesterone is currently a leading therapy for preventing preterm birth. Unfortunately, many women are insensitive to the relaxatory effects of progesterone. We discovered a dual-action agent that (1) maintains uterine progesterone receptor expression in a state that is consistent with progesterone sensitivity, and (2) directly inhibits uterine contractions. This agent has potential to increase the percentage of women that respond to progesterone, while exerting 'dual action' as a tocolytic.

PurposeCalcium carbonate deposits formed under the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) at peak glacial conditions contain information about both the existence of life'sustaining environments at the ice-bedrock interface and processes that generate basal meltwater. These dark, cold environments sustained diverse microbial communities thrived because there were diverse energy sources and, astonishingly, sometimes hosted microorganisms commonly associated with hydrothermalism. The subglacial carbonates reveal that subglacial volcanism occurred at glacial maxima and created sub-AIS oases where life thrived. Volcanically-induced basal meltwater discharge may have also contributed to ice sheet destabilization as well contributing to the influx of Fe-laden freshwater into the Southern Ocean. Consequently, the study of well-dated sub-AIS carbonates will increase knowledge of Life on our's and other planets, as well as poorly known subglacial hydrology and processes under the AIS.

PurposeThis project is concerned with the development and advancement of the PFAS Harvester: a novel poly-generation thermal process for combined destruction and resource recovery from PFAS contaminated media. The proposed research seeks to determine the fundamental science underpinning the creation of the PFAS Harvester and identify operating conditions necessary to support its commercial rollout. The project will pay a special attention to field testing of a pilot'scale prototype of the technology using PFAS concentrates generated at an active remediation site. The project is expected to deliver the scientific building blocks necessary for development of the Harvester; representing a vital step towards an end-to-end PFAS remediation solution.

PurposePreviously the major means of dealing with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is by adsorption, to collect and remove PFAS from contaminated sites. However, PFAS still exist, non-degraded and waiting for destruction. Targeting slurry waste from current remediation / adsorption plants, this project aims to efficiently degrade PFAS by combining electrochemical oxidation with sono-chemistry to enhance degradation capacity, to accelerate PFAS desorption / transportation from slurry waste, to avoid electrode fouling and to detoxify PFAS. The expected outcome of this project is to clean up contaminated sites, including PFAS / precursors and other persistent organic pollutants, leading to significant environmental benefits.

PurposeCyanobacterial blooms in wastewater treatment plants impact on effluent quality and the utility of recycled water, posing a significant risk to the economy, the environment and public health. To understand the causes of cyanobacterial blooms in pond-based wastewater treatment plants and the risk they pose, this project will use the latest molecular techniques to examine how the microbial communities within these systems interact with each other and their surrounding environment to form blooms and produce toxins and other harmful metabolites. Such knowledge will inform risk assessment and provide strategies for the mitigation of future bloom events, improving the security of our increasingly valuable recycled water resources.
