PurposeAnxiety disorders are common and debilitating conditions affecting thousands of Australian children. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is the gold'standard psychological treatment but very few anxious children can access or receive this treatment. This nationwide randomized controlled non-inferiority trial will examine whether a home-based computer intervention designed to enhance anxious children's attention control is as clinically effective but more cost-efficient and acceptable than CBT.

PurposeThe use of dressings to prevent hospital acquired pressure injury (PI) is growing, yet evidence of their effectiveness is lacking. The bulk of PI prevention research conducted in critical care settings has been assessed as being very low quality. There is no evidence of clinical effectiveness of dressings to prevent PI in hospital wards despite their increasing use at great expense to health services. This multi'site randomised controlled trial will provide much needed high-level evidence.

PurposeGroup A streptococcal associated diseases and serious pathology including rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease are responsible for more than 500,000 deaths each year. In animal models vaccine mediated immunity is specific to the site of vaccine administration. However, the data from endemic settings suggest that skin infection might protect from pharyngitis. The understanding of immune mechanisms would help design and develop a vaccine that would protect at both sites of GAS infection.

PurposeGiardia parasites infect ~1 billion people globally and are responsible for significant morbidity and disadvantage. There is no licensed vaccine and current treatment options are inadequate, resulting in poor compliance, treatment failures, rapid re-infection and drug resistance. New therapies are needed to combat this parasite and improve the health of millions world-wide. We will address this issue by investigating new drug candidates for the treatment of Giardia infections.

PurposeThis project aims to conduct the first randomised controlled trial of a modified-one session treatment (OST) for preschoolers with specific phobias (SP). SPs are highly prevalent (~10 percent), onset very early in life (~3 years) and predict a host of mental illness later in life. OST for SPs is well-established for older children (greater than7 years), yet is currently untested with pre'school aged children.

PurposeExtracellular proteins produced by pathogenic bacteria can facilitate microbial colonization of the host by mediating binding to host cells and by modulating the immune system. These proteins exert their effects by subverting specific elements of the immune system and this can allow infection to worsen. This project will increase our understanding of how this bacterium chronically colonizes humans and will identify the potential of a bacterial protein, termed GAPDH, as a target for control.

PurposeUrinary tract infections (UTI), which start as a bladder infection and often evolve to encompass the kidneys, are among the most common infectious diseases in humans. Streptococcus agalactiae is an important cause of gram-positive bacterial UTI. PurposeMalaria causes ~200 million clinical cases and greater than430,000 deaths annually. Prevention and treatment relies on drugs, however malaria parasite drug resistance is an enormous problem. To address this issue, and aim towards eliminating malaria, we need to develop new drugs. This project addresses this important health need by investigating the ability of new chemical compounds, developed at CSIRO, to kill human-infecting malaria parasites during different parts of their complicated lifecycles.

PurposeEvery cell in our organism is decorated with a coat of sugars, known as sugar code. Many respiratory viruses exploit this sugar code by binding to these sugars to cause infection. My project investigates if respiratory viruses can change our sugar code in order to more efficiently replicate and induce disease. Understanding how viruses can take advantage of the sugar code from our human cells will identify new intervention and treatment strategies to combat viral disease.

PurposeThis fellowship will investigate how interplay between the immune response and viral counteractive strategies determines the outcome of infection. I will also further develop my licensed drugs and vaccines through to clinical trials and to market for viral disease. My vision is that knowing how the virus and the immune system interact to determine disease severity will assist in devising new treatments and prevention programs to lessen the impact of viral diseases in Australia and worldwide.

PurposeIntravenous catheters are placed in the veins of most hospital patients, however insertion is painful and may need many needle punctures. New ultrasound machines can make the procedure easier and less painful, but changing to this method requires hospitals to rethink their services and train staff in the technique. This research works with hospitals, rural and remote educators and the national quality and safety organisation to identify the best methods to implement ultrasound services.

PurposeGonorrhoea is an increasing public health threat due to antibiotic resistance. The bacteria that cause gonorrhoea and meningococcal B disease are very similar, and observational data indicates that a meningococcal vaccine may protect against gonorrhoea. We will study whether gay and bisexual men, who are at high risk of getting gonorrhoea, that receive a meningococcal B vaccine have fewer new cases of gonorrhoea compared to those who do not receive the vaccine.
ActivityA multicentre randomised controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of the meningococcal B vaccine, 4CMenB (Bexsero), against Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection in gay and bisexual men

PurposeVery little is known about the number of children who leave school with poor language skills and the extent to which these difficulties impact on them. In this landmark study we will look at the relationship between language, and associated literacy and numeracy, and important issues affecting young people (such as mental health, quality of life and employment) as they make the critical transition from high school.

PurposePeripheral nerve injury is a major health problem and is particularly devastating when it affects facial nerves. Large-gap nerve injuries are the most difficult to repair and current technologies are inadequate. This project aims to test a new technology to generate robust, rapid self-assembling nerve bridges that are made entirely of nerve cells to repair large-gap peripheral nerve injuries in animal models with the future aim of progressing to human clinical trial.

PurposeInfections with mosquito-borne viruses are increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. Ross River virus is endemic in parts of Australia, PNG and Pacific islands, while chikungunya virus is distributed globally and causes recurrent pandemics that involve millions of people. These viruses cause severe musculoskeletal disease for several months after infection. This project aims to establish how these viruses interact with the human host to cause disease and may provide a basis for new treatments.

PurposeMalaria and streptococcal diseases are collectively responsible for the loss of over 1,000,000 lives each year. We have studied the immune responses to the organisms responsible for these diseases and have used novel technology to develop candidate vaccines which are showing great promise in both pre-clinical and pilot stage human trials. We plan to conduct early phase trials of vaccines for both organisms and to further understand how the immune system can be trained to control them.

PurposeChikungunya virus (CHIKV) has emerged as a serious cause of human disease, with an expanding geographic distribution, infecting millions of people around the globe. Due to the chronic nature of disease, CHIKV has a major economic impact on affected nations. We have developed a novel vaccine for protection against CHIKV infection. The development of this vaccine will also significantly help in reducing the risk of the global spread of this disease, including in Australia.

PurposeFetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is often undetected resulting in inadequate services for children and high social and economic costs. Currently, time-intensive assessments are done by specialists who have long waitlists. Our aim is to tackle this challenge by testing a less time-intensive and culturally'sensitive assessment that general practitioners can use in remote Indigenous communities. The outcome will be quality, local services, improved health care and cost savings for families.
