PurposeOur school consists of 543 students, from diverse social and ethnic backgrounds. Our Maker Space is extremely popular with our primary students and due to the efforts of our incredible Maker Project Champion, Julie McKenzie, interest in this area is growing rapidly within the early childhood classes. Presently, our Maker Space is restricted to one area of our school and access is dependent on the timetabling of specialist lessons and school assemblies. It is our aim to continue to foster our students interest in this area by evolving our maker space to become mobile, allowing greater access to our resources across grade levels and allowing resources to be used on a regular basis in the classrooms.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate how typically-developing siblings affect the development of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD involves difficulties with language, executive functions and social understanding. For typically-developing children, growing up with siblings gives an advantage in these cognitive functions. Yet little is known about how having siblings- impacts on cognitive development of children with ASD. The project intends to longitudinally explore the mechanisms of sibling impact in families with and without a child with ASD. The outcomes will deepen understanding of child development, providing an evidence base for effective interventions to increase child competence and aiming ultimately to reduce the social costs of ASD.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate validated, rapid and pragmatic solutions to managing plant and animal maladaptation caused by global environmental change. Using Australia's iconic blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus), this project will test strategies for identifying the major climatic predictors of, and key genomic regions that underlie, adaptation to climate change. By integrating climate variables and genome sequences with field trial-derived trait and performance data from decades of research and thousands of trees, we will develop validated DNA-based tools for monitoring the rate of adaptation in our native forests and identifying climate-ready seed sources for environmental and industrial plantings.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate the relationship between dust deposition and marine productivity. This project will quantify dust deposition to the ocean and its chemical and ecological impact by using new geochemical techniques and novel approaches with autonomous ocean sensors. Expected outcomes of this project include improved estimates of dust deposition to the ocean and the development of globally-applicable methods for quantifying the link between dust and biology using profiling floats. This should provide significant benefits such as improved dust models used to predict future changes in nutrient deposition, with implications for predicting future ocean fish production and carbon uptake.

Infectious diseases in wildlife are difficult to track and control, because it is not feasible to monitor each individual in a population and know the contact network for a population. The project will create ways to best utilise incomplete observational data of contact networks to develop robust predictions of disease spread and population fate, and to reliably predict the outcomes of management interventions. These robust prediction methods will provide better insights for conservation of Australian wildlife.

PurposeThis project aims to develop an international database of underwater observations to predict the distribution of seafloor biodiversity over the entire Antarctic continental shelf for the present day and to 2100. Antarctic seafloor communities are unique and highly diverse, but their distribution is poorly known because biological data are sparse. These predictions depend on a unique and validated approach to estimate the present and future redistribution of surface primary production to the seafloor, and will enable calculating the amount of atmospheric carbon captured and stored at the seafloor. The maps will be at an unprecedented resolution of around 2 kilometres, and be invaluable tools underpinning policy, management and future science.

PurposeThis project aims to elucidate how the context within which disturbances occur affects food web linkages and how these map to responses in ecosystem function. There is a critical need to test the common assumption in environmental management that high biodiversity makes ecosystems resilient to disturbances. Studies that merely observe biodiversity change after disturbance cannot identify ecological processes connecting high diversity and ecosystem function, making experiments that manipulate identical disturbances in ecosystems with different biodiversity essential. This project will use field experiments that manipulate disturbances in streams replicated in low and high biodiversity regions and across gradients of chronic background stress to show how biodiversity sustains functional ecosystems, and how much diversity can be lost before ecosystems collapse.

PurposeThis project aims to trace how ordinary people's thinking about food safety has changed over time; from this, we can investigate food safety techniques and practices by government and industry. In studying Singapore, which has always imported nearly all food, the project expects to generate new lessons from Singapore's history that may widely apply in an era of globalisation and contemporary food system complexity. Benefits of the project include assisting food exporters and other food safety stakeholders in Australia to better understand the origins and complexity of food safety thinking.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate whether Australia's 'shared responsibility- approach to biosecurity is capable of facing the growing threat from exotic pests and diseases. Through the analysis of policy documents and the use of semi'structured interviews, this project intends to contribute to a deeper understanding of the inter- and intra-organisational characteristics that influence implementation of biosecurity. Expected outcomes include crucial insights into the capacity of a shared responsibility approach to protect agri-food production against biological threats, and the forms of institutional change that may be needed to enhance responsiveness to those threats. This in turn will benefit Australia's biosecurity system.

PurposeThis project aims to assess how past conditions influence grassland responses to the rising atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. High CO2 concentrations should stimulate productivity but in grasslands this is rarely realised because other, mostly unknown, factors constrain the response. By synthesising data from past experiments, this project aims to determine exactly why grasslands fail to realise the full productivity benefits of increased CO2 and when this will happen. This should improve predictions of carbon exchange and indicating the best direction for climate change adaptation measures.

PurposeThis project aims to build a model of the signals that regulate root nodule formation, unique root organs formed by some plants that host nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Nitrogen is often limited in the soil and agriculture relies on nitrogen fertiliser. Sustainable sources of plant nutrients are required to ensure food security and minimise the environmental impact of intensive farming. This project will provide fundamental information on why some species can form nitrogen-fixing nodules by examining the role of plant hormones. This will build the knowledge base required to potentially expand this symbiosis into non-legumes, harnessing the huge advantage nodule forming species have in staple crops.

PurposeThis project aims to establish a physical basis for the sensitivity of seismic observations to small changes in the great ice sheets of East Antarctica. These ice sheets are vulnerable to partial collapse or accelerated retreat. Early changes in such ice sheets may take place in the hidden ice-rock interface zone and could be detected by subtle changes in seismic signals that pass through layers of ice, sediments, water and bedrock in this zone. This project will undertake computer simulations, run tests on pre-existing data and examine two case studies, the Aurora and Wilkes Basins. The outcomes of this research will provide a basis for an early warning of ice sheet collapse using seismology, and contribute to future increased resilience to sea level rise.

PurposeThis project aims to constrain the magnetic response and detectability of mantle and hotspot-related vents. Deep'sea hydrothermal systems are oases of unique life and are considered as the most valuable scientific and mining targets ever discovered in the oceans. The project is expected to enable a better understanding of these enigmatic features, in both their active and inactive phases. It will use new and highly powerful processing methods on existing data and on data collected off the Tasmanian continental shelf. The project is expected to unveil the characteristics of hydrothermalism in a wide range of contexts and improve Australia's competitiveness in scientific and mining hydrothermal exploration and to potentially guarantee the supply of raw materials for future generations.

PurposeIn 2019 Hobarts youth dance company DRILL will present NEON, a performance that fuses artistic practice and STEM engagement for audiences and young participants. Three choreographers and three composers will create contemporary dance works with a cast of thirty young local dancers, responding to the chemical elements and exploring their forms, behaviours and uses. In partnership with the Young Tassie Scientists, audiences will first learn about the elements through hands on experiments and activities, which all include an artistic and scientific component, encouraging creative experimenting and play while learning. They then experience the dance works in a free-roaming and interactive experience, seeing some of their experiments in action.

PurposeVitamin D sufficiency is required for bone health. Sun exposure is the most important source of vitamin D for Australians but also a major risk factor for skin cancer. Sun safety campaigns have reduced skin cancers, but may reduce vitamin D sufficiency. My PhD aims to quantify the bone health benefits against the skin cancer risk associated with varying levels of sun exposure across the lifespan and define the amount of sun exposure required for vitamin D sufficiency across Australia.

PurposeOne possible cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is narrowing of small blood vessels (capillaries) within the brain, limiting blood flow and energy supply. Pericytes, a cell found only on capillaries, maintain blood flow throughout the brain. In AD, pericytes may die leading to an energy deficit and memory problems. We will test using human brains and animal models whether pericyte loss causes AD and how this is happening. Pericytes could provide a new therapy option for AD.

PurposeAcute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute lung injury (ALI) have very high mortality rates (over 30 percent). Unfortunately, mechanical ventilation, a life'saving intervention contributes to this high mortality. Interestingly, very few of these critically ill patients die from a lack of oxygen with the vast majority dying from 'non-lung' organ failure. In this study we will investigate the mechanisms linking mechanical ventilation with organ failure with a view to improving mortality.

PurposeDefects in the connections between nerve cells underpin many developmental disorders such as autism and mental retardation. Furthermore, defects in re-establishing nerve cell connections prevents successful regeneration after disease or trauma. Calcium is vital to nerve cells, especially as they grow and connect. This project will develop novel light-activated tools to manipulate calcium signals to control nerve cell growth and connectivity and enhance nerve regeneration.

PurposeSporadic Alzheimer's disease (sAD) is not part of normal aging and we must determine how and why it occurs. The epigenome (meaning, 'above genes') ensures that our genes are expressed in the right cell type at the right time. Epigenetic defects are of great interest as they are reversible; but first, the epigenetic changes that characterise AD progression must be defined. Our overall aim is to identify how epigenetic programming is altered in the nerve cells that die in AD.

A focus on healthy travel - walking, cycling, public transport - provides an under-explored opportunity to increase physical activity. PurposeGood livestock management and policies are crucial to maintaining economic stability, while addressing the challenges of climate change. Yet the policies and practices guiding the industry vary by region and nation. This project will hold three workshops. The workshops aim to assess how crop-livestock management practices impact regional farming performance under different climate change scenarios. Technologies, which will be used to assess the yield variability for diverse forage cropping systems, include existing model'scaling and remote'sensing techniques developed in Argentina (the most advanced biophysical models in the world). These assessments will take place in Argentina, Uruguay, and Australia. The workshops will also strengthen crop-livestock management skills for the three countries in different areas: systems modelling (Australia), remote'sensing system (Argentina), and livestock systems analysis (Uruguay). The project will be conducted collaboratively with livestock industry decision makers who will perform foresighting exercises to explore alternative futures. This will facilitate the development of forage crop regional management and preparation for environmental impacts.

PurposeThe project involves the replacement of the public toilet facilities at Lunawanna on Bruny Island. The existing facilities are out-dated and unable to cope with the high level of demand from visitors to the island - particularly those heading south to the popular Bruny Island Lighthouse. Construction of a new public toilet block will provide a modern facility to meet contemporary expectations, enhancing the visitor experience to the island whilst catering for the most basic of human needs.
