Ways to support this work

This work is funded by the public via direct donations. There are three usual methods of donation depending on the needs of the donor.

Privacy and your donation

Whether a donor is an individual or an organisation, I take privacy issues seriously. For this reason unless I am given specific instructions about who a donor is and that you are happy for me to share publicly that you are a patron of my work I do not thank individual donors publicly.

Having said this, I believe that the best advertisement for my work is your support. It is much easier for people to believe others when they speak about the value of my work than when I make my own claims about it. Your willingness to share the reason you support my work is what inspires other people to support my work. Please take a moment every now and then and, if you are happy to be seen publicly supporting my work, share that you do with your networks.

PurposeThe 2020 ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course (LCC2020) aims to deliver transformative research and translation to break the cycle of deep and persistent disadvantage for Australians. Critically, LCC2020 will tackle disadvantage in specific context to understand how people negotiate it daily in real places, and how best to design policies and programs that support improved life pathways. By understanding life course contexts much more finely and using new methods and better data to personalise responses to disadvantage, LCC2020 will deliver the evidence, infrastructure, capacity and partnerships to reduce disadvantage and better equip Australian children and families for emerging challenges.

A blood-borne renin-angiotensin system (RAS) produces a peptide (AngII) to control blood pressure, and fluid/salt balance. Many tissues, such as the brain and heart, also possess an independent, tissue RAS, but how these function is not well understood. The project will use a model whereby infiltrating macrophages (following damage to the heart) drive the activation of this system to trigger the local generation of AngII. This project addresses the question of where exactly in the heart the RAS components are turned on, how they interact to generate AngII and whether the activation of the local RAS is beneficial or not to cardiac function. The findings should provide critical insights into an important hormonal system.

PurposeThis project aims to enable individuals, industries and governments, to freely access vital and linked information carried in different media types from different sources by developing a deep attribute-aware framework that embeds heterogeneous features into a shared data space to achieve effective and efficient cross system information retrieval. With the proliferation of heterogeneous data sources, there is an urgent need to enable search and retrieval across different media types and domains. The framework developed by the project uses deep learning methods to develop meaningful image attributes to positively bridge the modality gap and the domain gap when hash functions are affixed to data. This project will significantly advance the research of multimedia retrieval, and benefit a series of related research problems whenever heterogeneous multimedia data are involved in their applications.

PurposeAbattoir workers and butchers kill animals to prepare food, farmers to cull stock, and veterinarians to alleviate suffering. Soldiers kill other humans in war, police or security guards to protect the public, and doctors to enact legal euthanasia. Research shows that these tasks can be confronting, and even traumatic. This project aims to test the processes through which people learn socially supported palliative killing to avert suffering and their neural underpinnings, with a focus on norms and empathic distress. It will focus on two core samples: veterinarians, who must euthanize animals, and health practitioners in Victoria, where legal changes will introduce -voluntary assisted dying- in mid-2019. It will investigate how practitioners learn palliative killing, and what the impact is on psychological variables such as empathy and identity. It will generate new understandings of social influence around life and death decisions, provide an evidence basis to inform policy makers, and help institutions and practitioners seeking to manage distress and respond to fast-moving, controversial policy changes.

Cell signalling involves the coordination of multi-molecular networks at the plasma membrane, the interface between the cell and its external environment. These are often thought to involve the assembly of multimolecular complexes through the action of protein scaffolds. This project will focus on how the contractile regulator, anillin, controls RhoA signalling by kinetic regulation. In particular, how nanoscale clustering of anillin by the dynamic actomyosin cytoskeleton modulates RhoA signalling for contractility and tissue homeostasis. PurposeThis project aims to improve the sensitivity and speed of Brillouin microscopes. Brillouin microscopes use light to measure the stiffness of samples in 3D without requiring physical access, allowing their use in inaccessible locations such as the interior of cells or within intact tissue. However, Brillouin microscopes are too slow to be used in most research. This project introduces a new approach based on different optical physics that is expected to enable faster and more precise imaging. The microscope will be used to study the movement of amoeba, where it is expected to reveal the controlled stiffening and fluidising of the different regions of protoplasm believed to underlie the cell mobility.

Superfluid helium is the only quantum liquid, characterised by flow without dissipation and quantised vortices. Leveraging the techniques of cavity optomechanics, this project aims to demonstrate control of superfluid helium properties at the quantum level, including the first demonstration of laser-cooling of a liquid into its quantum ground'state. The devices developed in this project will also serve as probes of unprecedented sensitivity for the study of 2D superfluid helium. The new technologies developed will have potential for broad uptake in the scientific community and generation of intellectual property and patents for quantum technology and inertial sensors.

These networks are the molecular basis for understanding human cells. PurposeThis project aims to uncover the role of key molecules in allowing brain cells to actively communicate with each other. Communication between neurons relies on the fusion of synaptic vesicles containing neurotransmitters with the presynaptic plasma membrane. The addition of vesicular membrane is transient as the vesicles quickly reform from the plasma membrane and refill with neurotransmitter ready for subsequent rounds of fusion. This recycling process ensures that neurons communicate efficiently, however the underpinning mechanism is unknown. This project aims to use a recently developed single synaptic vesicle super-resolution tracking method to establish how Myosin-VI and Synapsin-IIa orchestrate this recycling in central and peripheral neurons. It will explain how neurons manage to preserve their ability to communicate.

This project aims to understand how genomes of differently acquired Symbiodinium have evolved to support symbiosis with corals, through sequencing of algal genomes of Symbiodinium. By comparing theoretical models to this combination of data the project will help to determine whether dark energy changes with time, measure detailed clustering properties of dark matter, and test advanced theories of gravity.

PurposeThis project aims to investigate whether the discovery of diamonds in oceanic rocks, known as ophiolites, is a global phenomenon. Even half a century after the introduction of plate tectonic theory, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding the fate of subducted lithosphere and Earth processes deep within the mantle. This project will use Australasian examples to test the hypothesis that diamonds are ubiquitous in the mantle and occur widely in ophiolites. Results will have major implications for our understanding of how ocean crust grows and how rocks in the upper mantle form, as well as providing insight into how organic carbon is cycled from the seabed deep into the mantle before being returned back to Earth's surface.

It is expected that this knowledge will enhance the capacity to control and promote reactions. PurposeThis project aims to investigate peptides that modulate prey behaviour. Chemical signalling constitutes much of the language of life underwater. Certain cone snails evolved a hunting strategy, where they release potent peptides to modulate fish behaviour through yet unknown mechanisms. The snail then expands its mouth and eats the fish without resistance. This project will investigate the mechanisms at play using transcriptomics, proteomics, peptide synthesis, behavioural pharmacology and nuclear magnetic resonance. This will advance the knowledge of aquatic chemo-modulators on a functional, structural and evolutionary level, and provide a source of molecular probes with unique pharmacology and applications in human physiology, developmental biology and aquacultures.

PurposeThis project aims to characterise a new stem cell population that can maintain both blood vessels and contribute to a variety of tissues whether fibrous, bone, fat or cartilage. Blood vessels comprise an inner endothelial layer and surrounding mesenchyme, are integral to many organs and constitute a unique system connecting different parts of the body. Despite their importance little is known about how they are maintained and how they contribute to the response to injury. Previous work has described several populations of stem cell capable of self renewal and repletion of the endothelium or the mesenchyme. This project will examine the potency of these different progenitors to give rise to each of these fates in homeostasis but also during sounding and bone formation. This will help define a unique population of stem cells capable of both vascular and mesenchymal repair.

Currently, this process cannot be predicted accurately leading to compromised safety, excessive weight, and increased mission cost. The expected outcome is an ablation model for vehicle design which, for the first time, is based on experiments with a realistic aerodynamic flow. PurposeThis proposal aims to uncover the source reefs for Crown-of-Thorns Seastars (CoTS) outbreaks and the main routes of spread through the Great Barrier Reef. Coral eating CoTS pose a significant threat to the Great Barrier Reef. Using population genomics, invasive species genetics, and epidemiology and drawing upon extensive collections of adults and larvae dating from the 1980's onwards, this project will test prominent hypotheses about outbreak origins and subsequent spatial spread of CoTS via larval dispersal. The project expects to clarify the locations and timing of long distance dispersal pathways and to test whether larval detection near reefs can provide an early warning for local outbreaks on these same reefs.

PurposeThis project aims to define the most effective spray formulations, consisting of clay nanoparticles and induced RNA interference (RNAi) to manipulate gene expression in plants. Topical application of double'stranded RNA (dsRNA) for RNAi represents an attractive alternative to genetically engineered crops. However, naked dsRNA is unstable and is not efficiently taken up by plants. For these reasons, topical application of dsRNA has thus far produced only modest induction of RNAi in plants. Nanoparticle-facilitated manipulation of gene expression in plants will enable sustainable clean green strategies for protecting crops from diseases. This project will result in improved crop protection and productivity and boost the export potential of Australian crops.

PurposeThis project aims to develop a novel zebrafish platform for elucidating the circuits that mediate lateral line perception.-The sensory modality by which fish detect and respond to water flow is poorly understood. This project proposes a novel preparation in the zebrafish model for applying controlled water flow using microfluidics, thereby stimulating the lateral line. Because the animal remains stationary, it is possible to perform whole-brain calcium imaging of cells and circuits that respond to water flow, and to use optogenetics to stimulate or silence these neurons. This will reveal the circuitry mediating flow perception, and its relationship with other senses, in a way that has been previously impossible.

The kinase Fyn (which is localised to dendritic spines where memories are formed) activates the ERK/S6 pathway leading to massive translation of the scaffolding protein Tau. More importantly, the activation of this cascade is Tau-dependent. This project aims to determine how Tau activates this pathway, and to decipher the physiological role of the Tau/Fyn/Tau feedback loop. PurposeThis project aims to improve our understanding of the cause of evolutionary limits. It will test the prediction that trait combinations with high genetic variation are highly correlated with other traits, and therefore are more evolutionary limited than they appear. This project will develop and implement novel evolutionary and statistical manipulations and methods to test this prediction, and is expected to provide new methods for the study of selection. A better understanding of evolutionary limits will provide a significant benefit, enabling better predictions of how natural populations will evolve over short and long time'scales, and their risks of extinction.

PurposeThis project aims to explore animal venoms for new pain-causing toxins, to determine their structure and mechanism of action. Many venomous animals use their venom defensively and envenomation is frequently associated with rapid and often excruciating pain. In most cases the molecular mechanisms by which they achieve this is unknown. Using biochemical, pharmacological and biophysical techniques, this project expects to uncover toxins that employ new mechanisms of pain signalling, leading to new insights into pain physiology.

PurposeThe project aims to create new precision-built polymer vesicles with controlled size, stability, functionality and environmental responsiveness to mimic some of the key dynamic functions of the cell. The project expects to generate new knowledge on the dynamic interplay between the polymer and its bilayer including on-demand activated polymerisations and reactions, logic gates and in situ sensors. Expected outcomes of this project include new synthetic polymer techniques and new quantitative insights into the role of compartmentalisation on chemical reactions and polymerisations. This project will provide fundamental knowledge on bio/polymer vesicles with great potential to advance the polymer industry in Australia.

PurposeThis project aims to develop the first global ecosystem model with a more realistic representation of zooplankton. Fish are the main source of protein for 3 billion people, yet fish catches are declining. Current models of future fish biomass under climate change do not consider the complex role that zooplankton play in transferring energy from phytoplankton to fish. By resolving the link between phytoplankton and fish, this project will vastly improve estimates of future global fisheries production and regional variation. Such knowledge is vital for future food security in Australia and globally, and also to understand the role of zooplankton in carbon export in the ocean.

The materials and technology generated will allow detailed insight into how force influences focal adhesion between cells and how this force is transferred from cell-to-cell in tissue. PurposeThis project aims to investigate the cyclic-di-AMP signalling system in industrially important bacteria. The recently discovered cyclic-di-AMP is essential for normal bacterial growth and plays key roles in heat and antibiotic resistance, metabolism and virulence. This project will develop new biological assays to shed light on how bacteria sense and respond to environmental stress. Expected outcomes include a much deeper understanding of signalling inputs and outputs. This should lead to benefits such as guiding the improvement of bacterial strains used in food and biochemical biotechnological applications, and may provide the foundation for the development of novel antibiotics.

Expected outcomes include a fundamental understanding of non-radiative decay processes in organometallic complexes and more efficient lighting and display technologies.
