PurposeThis project aims is to discover epigenetic and genetic biomarkers that predict fitness changes, following exercise intervention. Individuals are remarkably variable in their responses to exercise interventions, and a large portion of these responses is attributed to genetics, and epigenetics (the effect of the environment on the expression of genes). Using controlled exercise training as a model, this project expects to discover epigenetic and genomic markers in skeletal muscle predictive of exercise adaptations. This will contribute to the development and future delivery of targeted and personalised exercise programs for the general population. This has important implications for improving health in the Australian population.

PurposePolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 1 million Australian women. PCOS via insulin resistance (IR) is implicated in diabetes, infertility and menstrual disturbance. Obesity is synergistic with PCOS worsening health trajectories. Tissue fibrosis is causally linked to PCOS, but the details and the implications for therapy need urgent research. This project will identify the role of muscle fibrosis in PCOS specific IR, and evaluate high-intensity interval exercise as a promising new therapy.

PurposeThis project addresses a critical problem in gait rehabilitation; predicting unstable locomotion and designing interventions to augment limb-joint function. The project will develop an autonomous ankle-foot assistive device to actively increase ground clearance when high-risk foot trajectory is detected. Using wearable sensor data, machine learning algorithms will predict high-risk gait and compute an actuator-induced ankle torque to maintain safe foot-ground clearance. A wearable autonomous joint-actuation system will contribute significantly to rehabilitation across a range of gait-impaired populations. The project's scientific and technological innovations will provide the opportunity for future developments in assistive technologies.

In this project, I hypothesise that physical activity slows down the ageing process via epigenetic mechanisms and some individuals have a genetic background that predisposes them to reap more benefit from physical activity.
