PurposeAge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in older individuals. AMD eyes with Reticular pseudo drusen (RPD) are newly recognised as at high-risk with faster AMD progression to vision loss. Identifying the genes that associate with RPD will provide a significant leap forward in our understanding of their cause and offer potential therapeutic options. Combining a world leading, multidiscipline team we will start a targeted search for these new genetic associations.

PurposeOur laboratory research confirms clinical observations that gas anaesthetics increase the risk of cancer relapse. We propose a large, international, randomised trial to answer the important question of whether anaesthesia impacts long-term cancer-free survival in patients having cancer surgery. Our clinical trial will research whether an alternative widely used intravenous anaesthetic (propofol) and a common pain medicine (lidocaine) reduces inflammation and thereby stops cancer relapse.

PurposeThe proteins in our cells are continuously being modified, which can e.g. alter their function, location, or lead to their disposal. Protein ubiquitination refers to many distinct signals used in all cellular processes. Deregulated ubiquitination causes cancer, inflammation and neurodegenerative disorders, presenting a huge, untapped resource for translation. Our work aims to understand the distinct ubiquitin signals and unlock the ubiquitin system for drug discovery.

PurposeA large proportion of underground water and wastewater infrastructure is nearing the end of its useful life. Currently, assets are replaced, which is costly and can cause major disruption. Lining technology may increase service life and prolong the need for asset replacement. Lining has had limited market penetration attributed to the limited demonstrable long-term performance, consistent standards and specifications. This project aims to address these issues and increase the demand for lining.
